Lasting Creatively Told Stories

Coastal Moments

As I continue to work on my next project of writing a novel, I have enjoyed remembering the various legends and ghost stories of the area in which I grew up.  A lot of the stories can be found in print or on the web, but I have been unable to find the story in print that was once told, almost 40 years ago, by a local near Sneads Ferry.

Many of the details are foggy, as I was truly young, but I remember that storyteller, aged from the winds of the coast, telling of an undying love between a sailor and his wife.  The sailor was aboard a merchant ship that sailed the shores of Virginia and North Carolina.  Somehow the sailor saves the woman’s life from being betrothed to a wicked, treacherous man of Virginia.   One evening, he sneaks her aboard the ship to set sail for North Carolina.  He cares for her and promises her the opportunity of freedom to find her true love.  Once in North Carolina, she is happy and filled with dreams.   She becomes his bride, but claims it is not enough and promises to repay the gift.  Of course, before she can repay, she dies at a young age, and I was told she was buried with a frown of despair due to unfinished business with her husband.   As the story goes, the sailor remained a sad loner that lived near her grave and lost meaning to living without her love.  Later or perhaps years, her husband refused to leave the area near his home and wife’s grave when a storm was approaching and with warning.  A hurricane swept the coastline and took the man from his home to be claimed by the sea, but he grabbed a hold of wood that was floating by and was washed ashore.  As I was told, it was her coffin that he had grabbed, and when opened, she had a smile upon her face because she had given back the same gift and saved her husband.  It was her love that saved him that day and gave meaning to continue to exist until old age gave him the opportunity to join his wife.  The local shared as the ending to the story that it has been sighted, a couple hand-in-hand, both smiling as they gaze into each other’s eyes, walk into the waves, and then disappear.

These stories and legends can stay with me from the memories of how they were creatively told.  These stories of the past can give meaning to the present.  This story of love goes beyond the fairytale of “happily ever after”, but gives substance and purpose to love.  It gives meaning to a Love that can rescue and offers the promise to give, which touches the heart to defend, preserve and protect that which can live forever.

Being Creative to Help

Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing. ~ Ben Franklin
To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing. ~ Elbert Hubbard

Sometimes I also feel intimidated to write anything from the risk of being criticized, I have those moments of doubt within me, my self-esteem, my goals, my interests, and overall my purpose of growth. But then I have to tell myself each day I should be doing something that is worth writing about or at least is meaningful to me.
Developing this blog has helped me to see there is still creativity in the world. The innovation or quality to develop something better, something original and new ideas that creates into something productive. I know we are facing so much in the world, and the news is dominated by the devastating tragedy in Japan and I continue to send my prayers each day. One can even make a small contribution like to the Red Cross-, and/or become involved in local groups within our communities that are pulling together to help within their potential and capacity. Too, we still have to be warned of those that take advantage of tragedy and use someone else’s misery and misfortunes to their benefit, so I have to be cautious and make myself aware of the various scams also by researching and communicating with others.

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of our heart. Proverbs 3:3.
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in our power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow”- when you now have it with you. Proverbs 3:27-28.

There is so much one can do for those less fortunate. We, including myself, possess some creative means of time, money, and/or skill that can be shared. Most times when I reach out to help for something as tragic as earthquakes and tsunami in Japan and seeing the struggles that survivors are facing with the aftermath it helps me also to become a better person to those around me in my own community. I think about the times when someone had given me something when I would be in need like a supportive phone call, an uplifting card, a few bucks, or even a helping hand with a project and that moment touched my heart. In life, I believe that various events that occur placing us to experience a loss, a tragic event, pain/suffering and rebuilding need to be viewed as opportunities. The opportunity to give of oneself to others and have faith that when we are down, scared, and overwhelmed, God is there helping and we will acquire from the experience by becoming a better person and community with time.

Each one needs,
The light of a sunrise,
A dance among the flowers,
Faith that truth stands firm,
Dreams can be uplifting,
Hope carries us along,
Love will rescue.

Each one needs,
The richness of color,
Soft breeze of courage,
A song of inspiration,
The grasp of a dream,
A path of believing,
